So for a really long time, I had this obsession over watches. And that’s why I read 3 articles about watches, or Rolexes. The 3 articles were mostly all about how Rolex developed different tech and techniques that made them superior to other watches. I’m also confused why rich people buy watches with ropes on it that you hang around your neck or put in your pocket.
Here’s what I summarized and researched:
Pro: Rolex is unique because of its top-level craftsmanship, durability, and status. Each watch is made with high-quality materials like 904L stainless steel, gold, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Rolex also produces its own movements and even makes its own metals, which keeps quality fully in their control. The watches are tested in extreme conditions—deep underwater, high pressure, and cold—to make sure they last. On top of that, Rolex is seen as a luxury symbol, worn by athletes, leaders, and celebrities. It’s not just a watch—it’s a statement.
Con: On the flip side, Rolex’s uniqueness comes at a very high cost. Some people feel you’re paying more for the name than the actual features. Many luxury brands now make watches with similar or even better functions (like smartwatches or high-end automatics) at lower prices. Also, Rolex can feel out of reach—long waitlists, limited editions, and high resale values can make it hard to even buy one. So while Rolex is special, it’s not always practical or accessible.
